Omar Amirana
The Lost SymbolOmar Amirana is a Washington, D.C., cabdriver drawn into the chase for Robert Langdon and Katherine Solomon when they climb into his taxi after fleeing the Adams Building. Nervous but cooperative, he becomes an accidental intermediary between the fugitives and the Central Intelligence Agency—and, at Freedom Plaza, helps the pursuing agents understand where the pair is headed.
A Routine Fare Becomes a Pursuit
Omar Amirana picks up Langdon and Katherine on Third Street after they have escaped the Library of Congress. Katherine directs him northwest toward Union Station, then along Massachusetts Avenue, and keeps the journey deliberately vague. As the cab passes Stanton Park, the dispatcher broadcasts an official bulletin describing two fugitives near the Adams Building. Omar recognizes that the people in his back seat match the description and, uneasy, contacts the dispatcher.
The dispatcher connects him with Turner Simkins, a Central Intelligence Agency field-operations agent. Simkins checks whether the passengers are in the cab, whether they can hear the call, where Omar is driving, and whether Langdon has a leather bag. Omar answers each question, including confirming that the cab’s divider lets him speak privately. Simkins tells him to drive as slowly as possible while a team gets ahead of them. The ordinary details of a fare—the route, the divider, the bag—have become information in a live pursuit.
The Detour to Freedom Plaza
Katherine abruptly changes the destination to Freedom Plaza. Omar sounds tense as he confirms the new route, and Simkins, listening on the phone, directs his team toward the plaza. Omar brings the cab to the curb; Langdon and Katherine jump out and run onto the stone map of Washington. They scan its intersecting streets and locate the bronze Great Seal of the United States, then point southwest.
Langdon returns to the cab and asks which way Alexandria, Virginia, lies. Omar points southwest, matching the direction the pair has identified. Katherine spots the Metro sign and chooses the Blue Line to King Street Station. Langdon pays Omar with a wad of bills and runs with Katherine toward the station stairs. Omar offers to drive them, but they are already gone. He reports their destination to Simkins, who orders him to stay put and says he will arrive shortly.
The Clue on the Bill
The bill on top of the fare is marked with a Jewish star over the Great Seal of the United States. Its points fall on letters that spell MASON. When Simkins reaches the cab, Omar hands him the bill and adds the connection he has just made: Alexandria is home to the George Washington Masonic Memorial, directly across from King Street Station. The agents have already discovered that the train has left, but the clue gives them a destination to pursue; Simkins rushes back to the helicopter, hoping to reach the station before Langdon and Katherine.
Omar’s role turns on a striking reversal. He has helped the agents follow the fugitives by reporting their presence and route, yet his recognition of the Masonic destination sharpens the chase at the moment the pair slips away underground. His cab is a temporary meeting point for two competing movements: the agents converge on Freedom Plaza, while Langdon and Katherine escape by Metro toward Alexandria.
Narrative Role
The episode gives a working cabdriver a brief, independent vantage on a pursuit otherwise driven by fugitives and federal agents. Omar’s friendly reception of the passengers gives way to alarm as the dispatch bulletin identifies them; he follows instructions, tries to make sense of the strange bill, and offers the practical help he knows best—a ride to Alexandria. The scene makes his cab both a source of information for the Central Intelligence Agency and the setting for an overlooked clue that Omar himself explains.
He does not control the escape or choose sides in the larger conflict. Instead, his calls and observations alter what the pursuers know: first that Langdon and Katherine are in his cab, then that they have gone to Freedom Plaza, and finally that the Masonic Memorial is their likely destination. Once Simkins takes the bill and heads south, Omar’s part in the chase ends, but his brief intervention has helped turn a cryptic symbol into a location.
